Questions and answers

Can I AirPlay to multiple speakers from my Mac?

Out of the box, only Apple’s Music and TV apps can send audio from a Mac to several AirPlay speakers at once. Audiout adds that for everything else: Spotify, your browser, a game, whatever is playing. Every AirPlay speaker in the house, in sync.

Why can’t I AirPlay Spotify to multiple speakers on my Mac?

Apple built multi-speaker AirPlay into its own Music and TV apps only. Every other app is limited to one speaker at a time. Audiout removes that limit. It takes what your Mac is playing, Spotify included, and sends it to all of your speakers together.

How is Audiout different from Airfoil?

Both send Mac audio to AirPlay and Bluetooth speakers. Airfoil has a free iPhone remote, and Audiout Remote, the free iPhone app, is coming soon. The difference is what happens when a speaker plays behind the others. Airfoil lines its outputs up to the slowest one and gives you a slider per speaker to set by hand. Audiout measures how far behind a Bluetooth speaker plays with your Mac’s microphone, or by ear, and corrects it. Audiout also puts every app on one mixer at once, with a fader per room in the menu bar, and Chromecast beside AirPlay and Bluetooth. It’s a one-time €24.99 purchase. The source is public on GitHub under GPL-2.0, and what you’re paying for is the signed, notarized, maintained build.

What speakers does Audiout work with?

Any speaker your Mac can reach over AirPlay: HomePod and HomePod mini, Apple TV, Sonos and other AirPlay 2 speakers, receivers and TVs with AirPlay built in. If it shows up as an AirPlay speaker, Audiout can put it on the mixer. Bluetooth speakers and Chromecast work too.

Can I set a different volume for each AirPlay speaker on my Mac?

Yes. Every room gets its own fader in the menu bar, so you can turn the kitchen down without touching the living room. Audiout Remote , the free iPhone app, is coming soon. It is included with Audiout for Mac and puts the same faders on your phone.

What do I need to run Audiout?

A Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 14.4 or later. Audiout is a one-time €24.99 purchase, no subscription.

Can I set the volume of each app separately on my Mac?

Yes. Any app you route in Audiout gets its own fader, so music in the kitchen can sit at a different volume than a video call staying on the Mac. Apps you don’t route follow Main Audio.

How is Audiout different from SoundSource?

SoundSource is a general audio control app for the Mac (per-app volume, per-app output, per-app effects and equalizers), and it plays to AirPlay speakers too. Audiout is built for one job, the whole house. Every speaker gets its own fader in the menu bar and stays in sync, scenes bring a set of speakers back in one click, and Audiout measures a Bluetooth speaker that plays behind with your Mac’s microphone. SoundSource has no measurement. If you want a per-app equalizer or Audio Unit effects, SoundSource does that and Audiout does not.

Why is my AirPlay audio out of sync between speakers?

Each speaker takes a slightly different amount of time to play what it’s sent, so the same song can land in two rooms a beat apart. Audiout keeps the AirPlay speakers on its mixer playing in sync. A Bluetooth speaker plays behind by an amount of its own. Your Mac measures it with its microphone, or Align by ear finds it from paired clicks, and Audiout corrects it.

Do I need an iPhone to keep my speakers in sync?

No. AirPlay speakers stay on one clock by themselves. A Bluetooth speaker that plays behind is measured with your Mac’s microphone, or aligned by ear on the Mac from paired clicks. Audiout Remote, the free iPhone app, is coming soon.

How do I play Spotify on my HomePod from a Mac?

Open Audiout in your menu bar, and every AirPlay speaker your Mac can see — HomePod and HomePod mini included — appears on the mixer. Whatever your Mac is playing, Spotify included, goes to the speakers you choose, all in sync. Each room gets its own fader, so the kitchen can sit quieter than the living room.

Can I play different audio in different rooms at the same time?

Yes, per app. Route Spotify to the kitchen while a video call stays on the Mac’s own speakers, each with its own fader. Apps you don’t route follow Main Audio, the master fader over everything.

Can my Mac play to Chromecast and AirPlay speakers at the same time?

Yes. Chromecast, AirPlay and Bluetooth speakers all sit on the same mixer, each with its own fader, playing at the same time.

Does Audiout work on Intel Macs?

No. Audiout needs a Mac with Apple Silicon running macOS 14.4 or later. Intel Macs are not supported.

Is Audiout a subscription?

No. Audiout is a one-time €24.99 purchase. That covers Audiout (version 1) and every update to it — bug fixes, reliability, and new features — at no extra charge.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Download Audiout and use every feature free for 14 days. No card, no email. After 14 days Audiout keeps playing on one speaker at a time until you enter a key. Buy one for €24.99, once, and everything you set up stays.

How many Macs can I use Audiout on?

One license covers every Mac you use. Your license key arrives by email and is also shown on screen right after purchase.

Can I get a refund if Audiout isn’t for me?

Yes, no reason required — the refund policy has the current window and the steps. Refunds are handled by Paddle, our merchant of record, and questions before buying go to support@audiout.app.

Why does Audiout cost money if it’s open source?

The source code is public on GitHub under GPL-2.0 because the AirPlay engine Audiout is built on required that license. What you pay for is the finished build: signed and notarized with an Apple Developer ID, packaged as a normal app, and maintained — no toolchain, no build step. Anyone is free to build it from source. Buying is the version where you don’t have to.

Is Audiout safe to download?

Yes. The trial download is the same signed, notarized build you keep after buying. macOS itself verifies it comes from an identified developer and hasn’t been tampered with. The full source code is public on GitHub, so what the app does is open to inspection. Checkout is handled by Paddle, the merchant of record. The developer never sees your card.

Is Audiout on the Mac App Store?

No. Audiout needs deeper access to system audio than Mac App Store apps are allowed, so it’s sold directly from this site as a signed, notarized download.

Does Audiout send my audio over the internet?

No. The audio goes from your Mac to your speakers over your local network and nowhere else. Telemetry and analytics are opt-in: the app asks on first run, and nothing is sent until you agree.
